Places to visit and things to do

West Bay

If you want a change from the beaches and coastal walks then make for the harbour where you will also find river boats for hire.
From here you can take a leisurely rowing boat trip on the River Brit through riverside meadows, but don’t forget to take a picnic.
Or take a stroll over to the old station and walk along the disused railway track to Bridport where you can visit the local brewery for a spot of wine tasting!

Why not visit one of the many traditional food stands located along the harbour front serving all types of holiday food from fish and chips to cornish pasties, Ice Lollies to Donuts.

Try your hand at crab fishing from the pier, but watch out for the seagulls trying to nick your bait !

Monkey World

Set amongst the woodland of Dorset lays 65 acres of sanctuary for over 230 primates. Monkey World was set up in 1987 by Jim Cronin to provide abused Spanish beach chimps with a permanent, stable home. Today Monkey World works in conjunction with foreign governments from all over the world to stop the illegal smuggling of apes out of Africa and Asia. At the park visitors can see more than 230 primates of 15 different species.

Abbotsbury Childrens Farm

There are lots of animals for the children to meet, greet and feed.

Considered one of the best Children's Farms in Dorset, there are fun things to do every day. Children can cuddle the guinea pigs, ride the ponies, race the tractors, play in the large undercover play area and bottle feed the baby goats. The baby goats also race around a track twice a day, after the race the children are invited to take a goat for a warm down walk on a lead.

The family cafe offers local Dorset produce cooked on site and the gift shop has a charming range of quality gifts.

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

Established in 1765 by the first Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle. Developed since then into a magnificent 20 acre garden filled with rare and exotic plants from all over the world. Many of these plants were first introductions to this country, discovered by the plant hunting descendants of the Countess.

The Garden is a mixture of formal and informal flowers, world famous for it's Camellia groves and magnolias. Noted in Dorset for its Rhododendron and Hydrangea collections and the charming Victorian Garden.

Facilities include the Colonial Restaurant, a quality gift shop and a superb plant centre where many of the flowers grown in the Garden can be purchased.

Abbotsbury Swanery

Abbotsbury Swannery in Dorset, near Weymouth, has become one of the most popular things to do for the family visiting Dorset. Located on the dramatic Dorset Coast, this unique natural wildlife habitat is also popular with film makers and has been used as a location for Harry Potter filming.

So if your family is looking for unusual things to do on holiday in Dorset, come to the Swannery and help hand feed 600 swans at 12.00 noon and 4.00pm daily, or get lost in the giant maze (the largest willow maze in Dorset), swing on the swinging nests play area, at the Kennels café or browse our quality gift shop. Parking is free!
